Kevin Phillips has urged Marcelo Bielsa to put Leeds United youngster Ryan Edmondson on the bench for the remainder of the season.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 19-year-old can apply much needed pressure on a struggling Patrick Bamford.
Bamford led the line for Leeds on Sunday as they lost 2-0 to Cardiff on their Championship return.
Marcelo Bielsa had no strikers on the bench as Tyler Roberts was playing as an attacking midfielder in the absence of the injured Pablo Hernandez.
Phillips was adamant a hungry Edmondson could prove to be useful off the bench in the promotion.
“They should have Edmondson on the bench,” he told Football Insider.
“It puts pressure on Bamford. When you know you have not got anybody on the bench that can come on and replace you, you can almost slip into that comfort zone knowing that even if you play at 75% you are not getting brought off.
“It is a concern for me and I think you should put the young kid on the bench. He might do something that changes a game.
“His enthusiasm will be there and his desire because he will want to impress.”
Bamford has missed 27 “big chances” so far this season – 10 more than any other Championship player.
Edmondson, who has spent a large spell of the year out injured, has been playing as the Under-23s main striker this season and scored eight times.
