Phillips: Tottenham could announce Romero this weekend after two 'huge' developments
Kevin Phillips predicts significant developments in Cristian Romero’s potential move to Tottenham in the next 48 hours.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest claims on the Atalanta defender’s future.
On Friday 30th July, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported Tottenham are “not happy” with Atalanta’s conduct during negotiations for Romero
This site understands Romero has accepted Tottenham’s offer of a long term contract while Fabio Paratici negotiates the structure of the £40million-plus deal.
On 27th July, it was announced that Tottenham stalwart Toby Alderweireld would leave the club to join Qatar club Al-Duhail.
Phillips insists Spurs would not have sanctioned the exit of such an important player if they weren’t sure that a replacement was on the way.

“From my experience, managers won’t let someone like that go unless a replacement is sorted,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“Or even in the background if something is pretty much done, that’s huge.
“We know Alderweireld was going to leave Spurs, I think he probably wanted to leave.
“You still don’t let someone like him go if you aren’t sure that someone else is coming in.
“You would expect to see some movement in the next 24 or 48 hours really.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he was announced as a Spurs player then.
“He’ll be a decent replacement and they need one because Alderweireld has been a very good servant for Tottenham.”
Alderweireld, 32, made 243 appearances for Spurs after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
He made 35 appearances in all competitions last season as he remained an important player under Jose Mourinho.
