Phillips: Three stars are on trial at Celtic

Kevin Phillips is baffled by Neil Lennon’s Celtic goalkeeper rotation and suggested all three men are on trial for the rest of the campaign.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suspects that the 49-year-old is having a good look at all of his shot-stoppers ahead of deciding on a number one for next season.

Vasilis Barkas, Conor Hazard and Scott Bain have all been handed starts in the Scottish Premiership since the turn of the year – and the latter has started the last two fixtures.

A £4.5million summer signing from AEK Athens, Barkas was expected to be the Hoops’ number one this season.

However, in an interview last week Lennon, as quoted by the BBC, said that the Greece international has not “settled” since his move.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Celtic’s goalkeeping situation, Phillips said: “To me it looks as if Neil has conceded.

“The season does look dead and buried in terms of the title so he might be trialling the three goalkeepers for next season.

“He might want to have a good look at all three of them. That is the only reason I can think that he would rotate it so much. He will be trying to figure out who is going to be the number one going into next season.

“If he watches them all he can decide who is not good enough and then move them on. It is the only reason I can imagine for the rotation.”

In other news, Celtic have made an approach to sign ‘their Steven Davis’, according to a top pundit.
