Phillips wowed by Bielsa and Leeds pre-season move that's 'massive' for rising stars
Kevin Phillips has hailed Marcelo Bielsa for giving Leeds United’s youngsters the chance to play a big role in pre-season.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, loved what he saw on Tuesday evening.
On Tuesday, Leeds’ pre-season schedule got underway with a clash against Guiseley.
Leeds essentially named their Under 23 side as the youngsters had the chance to play under first-team conditions and in front of fans.
Sam Greenwood, Joe Geldhart and Crysencio Summerville started and have all featured on the bench for the club in senior games.
Phillips insists this experience is vital to the development of these young players and could even hint at Bielsa’s plans for them.

When asked if it was a clever Bielsa move to get the youngster used to playing in a first-team environment, Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild, “Yeah, absolutely, he’s very clever.
“He’s simply a top manager and I love to see that. Why not? Give those young players the chance to play.
“It gives them the chance to get used to the atmosphere and to get used to the pitch. It’s brilliant.
“It makes sense because if he has to call on them this season, they won’t be shell-shocked, that’s massive.
“There’s no doubt it’s a sensible idea and it’s great for the fans to see those young players.
“It’s exciting times at Leeds, they have some cracking youngsters there.”
Leeds’ youthful team beat Guiseley 3-2 as Adam Forshaw got vital minutes in the tank following his long spell on the sidelines.
Summerville, Greenwood and Charlie Allen scored for the Whites.
