Phillips 'wowed' by ex-Tottenham star Cirkin after Sunderland footage emerges
Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin for his performance against Bolton Wanderers yesterday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the 19-year-old “deserves huge credit” for the way in which he has started the season.
Cirkin was pivotal in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Bolton on Saturday and provided the assist for Carl Winchester’s winner after 17 minutes.
The summer signing from Tottenham also impressed in the Black Cats midweek EFL Cup win over Wigan Athletic.
As shown by footage on the club’s website (22nd September), the left-back went very close to scoring a sensational solo goal in the 2-0 victory.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Cirkin’s form, Phillips said: “That run that he made in midweek, wow.

“I would love to have seen the back of the net ripple because it probably would’ve been goal of the season.
“The back four have really impressed me this season. They look really solid as a unit.
“Cirkin has come in and settled so well. He is young, has a great left foot and bombs forward. You can see that he is not afraid to get crosses in and have a shot as well. Defensively, which is key for me, he’s very good as well.
“Left-back is a specialist position and you need someone like him in that role.
“He deserves huge credit for the way he’s started the season.”
