Leeds United have been offered the chance to sign Montpellier striker Andy Delort – and he could be the next Jamie Vardy, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 29-year-old’s pace would give Marcelo Bielsa’s side a “massive advantage”.
Football Insider revealed yesterday that Leeds are among a number of Premier League clubs that have been offered the chance to sign the centre-forward this month.
Delort has been in fine form in Ligue 1 this season, his 18 appearances have yielded nine goals and six assists – only Kylian Mbappe, Memphis Depay and Kevin Volland have more goal involvements in the division.
According to the official Ligue 1 website, Delort is also the fastest player in France – his speed of 36.8 km/h, recorded against Saint-Etienne last year, placed him ahead of PSG’s Mbappe in the rankings.
When asked by Football Insider if the Algeria international would be a welcome addition to the Premier League, Phillips said: “When you hear he is faster than Mbappe, wow.
“Pace always excites me. We have seen what players like Jamie Vardy have done to this league, real pace gives you an advantage.
“Of course, we have seen players with pace and nothing else though! But if he has ability and pace, and you can get him through the door, you have a massive advantage.
“It will be interesting to see what happens with that one.”
