Phillips 'wowed' by Sunderland star Neil after talking to him on Friday
Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on the “very humble” Dan Neil after speaking with the Sunderland midfielder on Friday night.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he spoke with the 19-year-old at the Foundation of Light’s 20th birthday Gala Awards Dinner.
Neil has been one of Sunderland’s standout players this season.
He starred for Lee Johnson’s side in their midweek EFL Trophy win over Lincoln and scored a sensational goal to open the scoring from long-range.
Across all competitions this season, the centre-midfielder has contributed two goals and three assists in 13 appearances.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Neil’s striker at Lincoln, Phillips said: “Ah wow, what a goal it was.

“He’s not afraid to have a pop. It was great to see. He’s got so much confidence in his game.
“I actually chatted to him on Friday night. He seemed a very humble young kid.
“There is not doubt about it, he is an exciting young talent. I love watching him player. He plays with such a freedom and air of confidence.
“If Sunderland are serious about getting promoted they need to hold onto young, talented player like him. He’s shining in that Sunderland shirt this season. He has got such an abundance of quality.
“I just hope that he has the right people around him because he was a very nice kid.”
