Robert Piers believes that Arsenal need to spend big in the summer transfer window if they are to win the Premier League title next season.
The Gunners finished fifth in the league during the last campaign and were 19 points adrift of champions Chelsea.
The north London club finished outside of the Champions League places for the first time under long serving manager Arsene Wenger, but the Frenchman will be at the Emirates Stadium next season after signing a two-year contract extension.
Arsenal legend Piers feels that his former side must strive to win the league title next season and states they will have to break the bank to achieve domestic success.
“Arsenal need to buy some players and spend a lot of money because the first objective, and we need to focus on this objective, is to lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the season,” Piers told Sky Sports.
Arsenal will be hoping they can keep their star players this summer, with the future of senior pair Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil still unclear.
They may also need to bring in some extra quality if they are to compete for the Premier League title.
The Daily Express reported earlier in June that the Gunners were eyeing a £95million bid for Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe and that an initial £87million offer had been rejected.
It would be a world-record move if he joined the Premier League side and shows a real statement of intent.
The 18-year-old made 44 appearances across all competitions last season for French champions Monaco, scoring 26 goals and supplying 14 assists in return.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since the 2003/04 season and it may take a big spending spree in the summer to help break that duck.
In other Arsenal transfer news, they are set to hijack Everton’s move for a forward.
