Premier League giants Manchester United have made Everton star Romelu Lukaku their top summer transfer target, according to a report.
The Express has claimed that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has changed his transfer priorities due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury, which is likely to keep him out until the New Year.
It is detailed that the Portuguese boss originally wanted Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann to play off the powerful Sweden international, but now the priority is to find an out and out number nine.
This has led to Toffees powerhouse Lukaku topping United’s target list even though they are expecting to face stiff competition from Chelsea.
Lukaku, 24, has gone into the final two years of his contract at Everton and is so far refusing to extend his deal.
However, it is also understood that the Toffees want a world-record £100million fee for their star who was brought in for a club-record £28million fee from Chelsea three years a go.
The 58-time capped Belgium international has since returned a stunning 87 goals in 166 encounters in total for Everton and he would certainly be a big loss to the club if he does leave.
Football Insider verdict:
In an ideal world for Everton they would hold onto their star player. However, due to his contract situation this is the summer where they must allow Lukaku to leave. The Belgian’s value is only going to plummet after the summer window and if the Toffees want to avoid letting their best player go for a fraction of his true value then Everton must let him leave. The expected received fee will then allow the Merseysiders to go out and replace Lukaku and there are certainly players out there who can replace the Belgian given that they receive the right amount.
In other Everton transfer news, the Toffees are weighing up a £20million double striker move.
