Pochettino delivers update on Edwards, Tottenham fans will be thrilled

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham wonderkid Marcus Edwards is closing in on a return to the Tottenham team after three months on the sidelines.

The brilliant young playmaker has been absent since October with an ankle injury and he also recently had his tonsils taken out.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has now revealed that the teenager, who is widely hailed as the most exciting of the next generation of White Hart Lane stars, is nearly ready to train with the senior squad.

Asked for an update on Thursday on Edwards’ fitness, Pochettino said, as quoted by the official Tottenham website: “Always it’s up to the player. It’s true that he’s still recovering and he is very close to starting to train with the team again.”

Edwards’ injury kept him out of last Sunday’s FA Cup win over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane, a match he might have otherwise hoped to have played in.

Pochettino rang the changes and handed starts to a number of fringe players, with central midfielder Harry Winks, centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers and attacking midfielder Josh Onomah all involved alongside senior fringe men such as Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies, Vincent Janssen, Kevin Wimmer and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.

Tottenham fans have high hopes for Edwards, who has been likened to a young Lionel Messi by his manager, and will be thrilled that he will soon return to action.

The 17-year-old was handed his senior Spurs debut as a second-half substitute in their 5-0 League Cup win over Gillingham in September, 24 hours after being hailed as a potential great by Pochettino.

“He [Edwards] is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player but now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Telegraph. “And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”

The young playmaker was selected on Spurs’ pre-season tour of Australia and made a huge impression in a number of pre-season friendlies.

Tottenham fans who are keen for academy stars to graduate into the first team will be looking for him to make an impact in the senior side in the second half of the campaign.

Spurs are preparing for a return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host West Brom at White Hart Lane in a lunchtime kick-off that gives them the chance to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea.
