'Positivity is growing' - Rangers legend makes big statement about potential of Ibrox side
Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has made the massive claim that the current squad assembled under new manager Steven Gerrard is the best at Ibrox in a decade.
The former title winner is particularly pleased that the Gers have brought in some ‘leaders’ to their squad, and he has even admitted that the Ibrox side could make a real go at winning the league title.
“I’ve got to admit that even me, someone who has preached keeping feet on the ground, getting as excited as the supporters about what MIGHT happen and while I’m happy with the players brought in, my positivity is growing because of Gerrard” he said, as quoted in his column in the Evening Times.
“I believe this to be the best Rangers squad in a decade – you read that right – and at long last there are some leaders on the pitch, so badly missing, and players who can put in a proper tackle.
“Rangers have a chance next season. I now honestly believe that” he concluded.
The Gers have failed to mount a serious title challenge since returning to the Scottish Premiership, finishing in third place in the last two seasons.

It is far too early to tell if Derek Johnstone’s claims are correct, but there does seem to be a lot of excitement amongst Rangers fans following the appointment of Steven Gerrard. And you can’t really blame the fans for being hyped up, after the poor fare they have had to sit through in recent seasons. As for Johnstone’s claim about the Gers squad, a decade ago the Gers had just reached a European final so he has got that wrong, although it might well be the best squad since the Gers got promoted. To keep the momentum building, Gerrard really needs to get off to a good start in his Europa League qualifiers, and just as important will be getting a good result at Aberdeen on the opening day of the season. But really we won’t be able to tell how Gerrard is doing until the action begins on the pitch, But at the moment things do look promising at Ibrox.
