Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to welcome Glenn Whelan to the club.

The 33-year-old central midfielder penned a two-year deal with the Villans, after the club agreed an undisclosed fee for his services with Stoke City.

Villa announced the news on their official website and on their official Twitter account on Thursday morning, and Stoke confirmed his departure shortly after on their own website and Twitter account.

Whelan joins the Villa squad as an elder statesman, and he will be expected to pass on his experience to the club’s young players, as well as make a big impact in the middle of the park.

The 33-year-old was a key figure in the Potters’ midfield last term, and he played 31 league and cup games for the club.

He arrived in Staffordshire in January 2008 in a £600,000 move from Sheffield Wednesday, and he went on to make 337 appearances across all competitions for the club.

The Villa Park faithful were excited by Whelan’s arrival in Birmingham and they took to Twitter to show it.

The Irishman also becomes Villans manager Steve Bruce’s fourth signing of the summer, as he joins Sam Johnstone, John Terry and Ahmed Elmohamady in Birmingham.

Whelan has been capped by the Republic of Ireland on 81 occasions, and he represented his country in both the 2012 and the 2016 European Championships.
