Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Swansea are weighing up a £15million bid for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to a report.
The Daily Mail has claimed that the top flight pair are interested in taking the 22-year-old, with the Serbia international currently struggling for game time at the north east side.
Mitrovic made the move to St James’ Park from Belgian giants Anderlecht in the summer of 2015 for a fee of £13million.
The striker built up a reputation for being temperamental in his debut season at Newcastle with two red cards and five yellows from his forward position.
However, he did also manage to score nine goals in 36 appearances for the club as they suffered relegation from the Premier League.
But, with Mitrovic missing the first four matches of the Championship campaign due to a suspension manager Benitez decided to bring Dwight Gayle in from Crystal Palace to give his side more strength in attack.
The 26-year-old Englishman has been an instant success at the north east giants with a fantastic 17 goals in 20 appearances and this has meant that Mitrovic hasn’t got much of a look in.
The former Anderlecht hitman has played just 14 times for Benitez in all competitions this campaign with a return of just three goals and his future could now lie elsewhere.
Football Insider verdict:
With the form of Gayle it has become clear that Mitrovic’s future lies elsewhere if he is to become a first choice striker. The reported £15million offer would be huge to Newcastle for a fringe player. Additionally, a return to the Premier League would be a huge opportunity for the Serbia international, who has so far proven to be a bit of a flop in the north east. With his suspension record and a poor return of just 14 goals in 50 appearances the Toon must now cut their ties with the volatile Serbian.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Toon are targeting this international attacker to replace departing 24-year-old.
