Arsenal are expected to be in a position to make a “big” signing in the summer transfer window.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Gunners are set to earn “phenomenal” prize money this season.

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Man City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (22 March), passing up the opportunity to claim their first major trophy in six years.

However, the north London giants sit nine points above Pep Guardiola’s side at the top of the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s finances are set for a substantial boost after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Sporting Lisbon next month.

Why Arsenal are having 'amazing' season financially

It is understood Arsenal are considering selling a first-team star to help them balance the books this summer.

It comes after Mikel Arteta was backed with more than £250million worth of signings this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed whether Arsenal are in a position to strengthen again this summer.

“I mean, you have to remember they're on course for an amazing financial season,” said Borson.

“They’re likely to win the league and be in the semi-finals at least of the Champions League, so they're going to have an amazing financial year.

“Obviously, they'd quite like to sell some of the players that aren't really performing or haven't worked, like every team. That’s not that easy to do.

“I think they'll be able to sign a big player. I don't think they'll have a summer like this summer because there's a limit to what you can spend.”

Why Arsenal could struggle to sell stars

Borson revealed Arsenal could face difficulties selling players in the summer window.

“I don't foresee any issues with their financial position, even though people said they'd like to sell,” said Borson.

“I’m sure they would like to sell some of the fringe players, some of the players that are getting into their sort of late 20s. I'm sure they'd like to sell them. Everybody would like to sell these players. The problem is there are no buyers.

“Barcelona are out the market. Real Madrid have got to be very careful with how they spend money outside of free transfers. Bayern Munich maybe will do one of these sort of very big signings per year.

“PSG don't seem to be in that kind of world anymore. They seem to like players at a slightly lower level, not out of England, so there are very few buyers outside of the Premier League, and a lot of these Arsenal players are not going to be suitable for Premier League moves.

“It's not going to be easy for them to sell, but they've had an amazing financial year and you would expect it to continue to be good. The prize money that they're going to earn is going to be phenomenal, so yes, I do think they'll be in a position where they can think about making a signing.”
