Coventry City 'plotting to sign Angel Gomes' after Wolves transfer mission
Coventry City are plotting a move to sign Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes in the final month of the transfer window.
The 25-year-old is believed to be keen on a return to the Premier League, and Frank Lampard is prepared to give him the opportunity as he eyes a move away from Marseille.
The England international spent the second half of last season on loan at Wolves, where he was unable to save them from relegation and struggled to prove his worth.
However, former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Sky Blues believe Gomes can still be a success in the top flight after tracking his displays closely.
There is a belief that Lampard can get the best out of the midfielder by adjusting his style of play, after seeing him struggle physically during his spell at Wolves.
Work is now being done behind the scenes to get a deal over the line, with Coventry still keen to strengthen their squad ahead of the start of the new season.
Could Coventry City sign Angel Gomes?
The addition of a new midfielder has been high on Lampard's list this summer, after Football Insider revealed Coventry were considering a move to sign Georginio Wijnaldum.
After backing away from their pursuit of the 35-year-old, Gomes has now emegred as a leading target in his position, with growing expectations that a deal will be agreed.
Gomes has been keen to return to the Premier League, and Coventry have been told that if they can utilise him correctly, he could be a key asset this season.
"Angel Gomes is a very talented young player, everybody knows that," Brown told Football Insider.
"He's also a great lad, he works hard, he's good in the dressing room, and I've heard nothing but good things about him since his time in the academy at Man United.
"The big concern with Gomes has always been about his physicality, and whether that would limit his chances in the Premier League.
"He struggled during his loan spell at Wolves last year, and I think that's turned a lot of clubs off, because there was a lot of hype around him after his England debut.
"Coventry will have seen what he did at Wolves and what his limitations are, because they had scouts watching them and watching him.
"It seems they are going to make a move to sign him, so there must be something they've seen that makes them think he will be a success there, regardless of what happened at Wolves.
"If they can play more possession-based football and limit the ammount of running and battling he has to do, then he can be a top class asset for them.
"So if Lampard is willing to make those tweaks and adjustments, then Gomes can definitely be a success at Coventry, it's just about whether that will happen.
"If they're going for him, as it seems they are at the moment, then they must believe they can get the best out of him."
Why did Gomes leave Wolves after his loan spell?
Gomes' availability has placed a number of Premier League clubs on alert in the last 12 months, with his stock growing after featuring for England under Lee Carsley's management.
However, Football Insider revealed that Gomes was not interested in making his loan spell at Wolves permanent after they were relegated from the Premier League.
After a difficult spell at Molineux in which he started just seven games in the Premier League, it became clear that he was unlikely to stick around.
Instead, he is eyeing a move back to the Premier League, with Coventry now emerging as the leading contenders in the final month of the transfer window.
