Hull City backed to 'agree' Axel Tuanzebe signing ahead of rivals

Hull City are among a number of clubs plotting a move to sign former Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe in the coming weeks.

The 28-year-old left Burnley upon the expiry of his contract in June, and is now attracting interest from a number of clubs both in the Premier League and Championship.

Both Hull and Coventry City have considered a move for the DR Congo international, while Wrexham have become the latest club linked with his signature.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who represented Hull during his playing days, told Football Insider that a move to the MKM Stadium could be ideal for Tuanzebe.

The opportunity to stay in the Premier League will no doubt be a draw for the centre-back, while he would be able to compete for a regular place in the starting XI.

Dropping down to the Championship also remains an option, with promotion-chasing clubs said to be keen, as Tuanzebe remains very highly regarded within the game.

Could Hull City make a move for Axel Tuanzebe?

Tuanzebe was highly regarded during his time at Man United, where an injury derailed his career, over which Football Insider explained the centre-back had opened a legal case.

Regardless of the fallout over his time at Old Trafford, though, he has forged a strong career for himself further down the Premier League and is now weighing up his options.

His performances for Burnley last season, as well as for the DR Congo at the World Cup, have attracted interest from clubs, with Hull one of the leading contenders.

"I can't believe Axel Tuanzebe is still a free agent, by the way," Brown told Football Insider.

"He's always been very highly regarded, everybody you speak to who has worked with him says how good he can be and how he's a strong character behind the scenes too.

"I have no doubt he could still do a job in the Premier League, maybe for one of the promoted sides, or for a top Championship club.

"Hull are one club who I've heard have been having a look at him, and I think that would be a good opportunity for him and for the club to improve their options.

"Tuanzebe would be competing for a starting place there, so it would make a lot of sense for him as well if he wants to stay in the Premier League.

"I'm sure he will find a club before too long, though, because as I say he is very highly thought at a lot of clubs, and the opportunity to get him in on a free is a great one."

Which other centre-backs are on Hull's list?

Speculation about Hull making a move to sign Tuanzebe comes as Sergej Jakirovic aims to bolster his squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

Following a 2-0 win against Man United on the opening day of the season, optimism is high at the MKM Stadium, and they are working on deals to strengthen their squad.

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 20 August that Hull are closing in on an agreement to extend John Egan's contract and are now in advanced talks.

The Ireland international was impressive in their win against Man United, and continues to prove his worth on and off the pitch following a strong season last time out.

Alongside the potential signing of a new centre-back in Tuanzebe, Hull are also aiming to ensure they keep hold of the assets they have already got.
