Sources: Aurele Amenda to undergo Coventry City medical after bid accepted
Coventry City have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Aurele Amenda, sources have told Football Insider.
The Sky Blules have agreed a £17million deal after negotiations with Frankfurt, and the defender will be allowed to undergo a medical ahead of completing the move.
Amenda is at the World Cup with Switzerland, but has yet to feature at the tournament where his country have progressed into the quarter-final.
Frank Lampard's side identified the centre-back as an improvement on their current options, having been keen to land a centre-back this summer.
After winning the Championship and securing promotion to the Premier League, they are determined to bolster their squad with quality additions in key areas.
He currently has three years remaining on his contract which is set to run until 2029, but Coventry have now moved quickly to agree terms and lure him away prematurely.
Why have Coventry City pursued a deal for Aurele Amenda?
Football Insider revealed in April that Coventry City are planning for a busy transfer window as they aim to back Lampard ahead of what they hope will be a strong season.
A number of key positions in the squad are set to be addressed, but there is a focus on improving the overall quality of the squad across the board.
Amenda is seen as an upgrade on Coventry's current defensive options, following what was an impressive season at Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
The centre-back made 29 appearances across all competitions last season, and started 15 of their last 18 Bundesliga games, establishing himself as an imporant part of the side.
He was also called upon to fill in at right-back when needed, and his versatility played a key role in the squad, which is seen as a valuable asset.
There is now a belief Amenda could provide additional quality as well as strength in depth for Lampard's side, as Coventry look to accelerate their transfer plans.
Which other positions will be key for Coventry?
As Coventry step up efforts to strengthen their squad, there are a number of key positions which have been identified as priorities ahead of their Premier League return.
Alongside the addition of a new centre-back, signing a new goalkeeper has risen to the top of their list, with efforts still ongoing to land Carl Rushworth on a permanent deal.
Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 3 July that Coventry are plotting a move to sign Everton goalkeeper Mark Travers, who has a release clause in his contract.
Since moving to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the goalkeeper has largely played backup to Jordan Pickford, and has made just two appearances, both in the Carabao Cup.
However, he remains highly regarded and is seen as a very capable goalkeeper as Coventry plan to strengthen ahead of their return to the top flight.
