Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe will have had his head turned by speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League this summer, according to Darren Bent.
The former Aston Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the 26-year-old will be desperate to secure a move to the top flight sooner rather than late and Leeds’ failure to seal promotion last season has left him in a predicament.
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Premier League outfit Burnley are looking at snapping up Roofe this summer, alongside teammate Mateusz Klich.
Bent says that Roofe proved himself as a centre forward last season and that with a year left on his contract, he will be thinking about playing in the top flight – be that with Leeds or another club.
“Last season he was brilliant, absolutely brilliant for Leeds, but before that he played wide, he never really had a set role down the middle,” Bent told Football Insider.
“It was only last season where I thought ‘Wow, Leeds have got a proper centre forward here.’ He’s down to his last year, you’d think Leeds would offer him a contract now but the difficulty is when you’re in the Championship and scoring goals regularly, you’re being linked to Premier League clubs, your head can’t help but be turned.
“Leeds are a big football club and he’s a fan favourite there. If Leeds get off to a bad start next season he’s thinking: ‘I need to get into the Premier League.’ He probably wants to go there now.”
Roofe finished last season as Leeds’ top scorer for the second consecutive campaign, netting 15 goals in the Championship to help the Whites to the play-off semi-finals.
Since arriving from Oxford he has scored 33 goals in 122 appearances, having been utilised in a number of positions in attack.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has tipped a 17-year-old with “extreme quality” to make waves at Elland Road next season.
