Pundit 'amazed' by what Everton board did before Benitez was sacked
Paul Robinson is “amazed” Everton sanctioned the sale of Lucas Digne only to sack Rafael Benitez days later.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed the Merseyside club “has problems at its core”.
On Sunday (16 January), the Toffees confirmed the dismissal of Benitez after a dismal 2-1 defeat to Norwich City.
The ex-Liverpool manager proved a highly divisive figure at Goodison Park.
During his seven months in charge, Benitez got rid of Everton’s director of medical services, head of recruitment, manager of scouting and director of football.
He also sanctioned Lucas Digne’s transfer to Aston Villa after falling out with the player.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of events, Robinson said: “I’m amazed at what’s happened this season and especially with Digne.
“He is one of the best left-backs in Europe going forward. One of the reasons he left was his relationship with the manager and then days later, the manager is sacked. It’s mind-blowing.
“The club has got problems at its core. This is a club that has spent half a billion since 2016 and is no better for it.
“They have had [Carlo] Ancelotti, [Ronaldo] Koeman and Benitez, who are all so-called ‘world-class managers’.
“The money wasted has been nothing short of phenomenal. When you compare the spends of Liverpool and Everton it tells you everything you need to know.
“Benitez was never the right fit. From the start, he was not the right fit. It just did not sit right with anybody.”
