Pundit: Aubameyang 'looks like he's going backwards' at Arsenal as exit edges near

Arsenal should offer Alexandre Lacazette a new contract because Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is “going backwards”, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Arsenal should give Lacazette a short-term deal because their current forward options are not up to scratch.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the Emirates at the end of the current campaign.

He told French TV channel Telefoot last week (26 November) his agents are working on potential options and he will make a decision in January.

The 30-year-old has scored just once in eight Premier League games this term, including four starts.

Aubameyang, who is earning more than £250,000-a-week at Arsenal, has scored four top-flight goals this season but has not found the net since October.

He missed a golden chance during the 2-0 win over Newcastle United at the weekend when he conspired to hit the post from three yards out when the scores were level.

Asked what Arsenal should do with Lacazette, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I would try and keep him for now.

“They haven’t really got any options up there. Gabriel Martinelli comes in and does well but he’s not really consistent. Aubameyang looks like he is going backwards.

“I’d keep Lacazette as an option, definitely. Maybe a short-term contract, like an extra year. Definitely keep him.”

Lacazette moved to Arsenal from Lyon in the summer of 2017 and has scored 68 times in 181 games across all competitions.

Aubemayang signed a new three-year deal with the Gunners last summer as he entered the final 12 months of his contract.
