Pundit backs Benitez to sign another Gray after £9m Everton transfer reveal

Alan Hutton has suggested Rafael Benitez could sign another Demarai Gray or Andros Townsend in January with transfer funds limited at Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland defender admitted the Toffees may be limited when it comes to their transfer targets.

An Everton source told Football Insider (11th October) the club will be operating with a restricted transfer budget again in January due to the Premier League rules.

The departure of James Rodriguez has effectively saved Everton £9million for the rest of the season.

That frees up funds for Everton to spend in the transfer window.

However, profit and sustainability rules mean they will still be limited to loans or small transfer fees.

Gray, who cost £1.7million, was the only player who cost a transfer fee in the summer.

Hutton backed Benitez and sporting director Marcel Brands to scour the market for more bargains ahead of January.

Asked if he thought Benitez could unearth another Gray or Townsend, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. To be fair, he’s not done too bad so far in his first transfer window.

“The boys he’s brought in have been absolutely superb. It is what it is. Sometimes teams are in that market where they can’t spend big.

“Everton, over the past could of seasons, have spent a lot of money. A lot of them haven’t quite worked out.

“It’ll be a case of see what you can get. If you can bolster the squad with somebody relatively cheaper then no problem.

“They’re going well at the moment. The signings are doing really well, they’ve hit the ground running and I’m sure the fans and Benitez will be really happy so far.”

Gray and Townsend have contributed three Premier League goals apiece since joining the Toffees.
