Pundit delivers 'definitive' verdict on Newcastle sacking Bruce after Athletic reveal

Steve Bruce’s position at Newcastle United is “definitely under pressure” following his holiday during the international break.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 60-year-old’s future at St. James’ Park.

According to The Athletic‘s Chris Waugh (September 11th) “some within the club weren’t impressed” by Bruce taking part of the international break off.

The Magpies boss fumed when quizzed by the Chronicle on the matter after Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Manchester United.

Bruce has led Newcastle to 12th and 13th-placed Premier League finishes since his appointment in July 2019 but is yet to win over the St. James’ Park faithful.

When asked by Football Insider if Bruce’s holiday has brought increased scrutiny onto his position, Campbell said:

“Bruce’s job is definitely under pressure right now.

“The thing is, if Steve Bruce had won a couple of games nothing would have been said.

“But the fact of the matter is Newcastle have been struggling and they want their manager there. The fans want the manager to be in every day rectifying the problems. It is not a good look for some people.

“Listen, I don’t know how long it was planned for but it is the way things go sometimes.

“At the end of the day, you cannot live your life by the press. The press are going to have a go at him. Unfortunately, it is part and parcel of the job.”
