Pundit delivers 'massive' verdict on possible Smith sack after Aston Villa source update

Kevin Campbell has urged the Aston Villa board to give Dean Smith more time amid increasing pressure on his position at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker claimed the “massive change” at Villa Park is to blame for the club’s mixed start to the campaign.

The Claret and Blue have picked up four points from their opening four games of the Premier League campaign.

As revealed by Football Insider (14th September), Smith will come under increasing pressure at Villa if he cannot mastermind an improvement prior to October’s international break.

League fixtures against Everton, Manchester United and Tottenham and an EFL Cup tie against Chelsea await the Midlands side.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the news, Campbell said: “Smith needs to be given a bit of leeway.

“There has been massive change at Villa this summer. They have brought in a lot of new players but their main guy, Jack Grealish, has been sold.

“You might think, ‘We should be better all round.” But it doesn’t always work that way. He was such an important part of that team. He was the maverick who opened a lot of doors.

“At the moment we have seen a mixed bag from them and I think that is because the balance of the team ain’t right. The players are finding their feet a bit.

“They need to find their feet quickly because you do not want to fall behind in the league. I’m sure Villa will be just fine though. It would be massive to sack Smith but he needs time.”
