Darren Bent has suggested that Everton should sign a goalkeeper to compete with Jordan Pickford to bring the best out of the 26-year-old.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker suggested Pickford has become complacent after being no. 1 for so long.
The England international has not missed a Premier League for the Toffees since signing from Sunderland in the summer of 2017 but has become a growing target for stinging fan criticism.
He came under criticism for his display in Everton’s 5-2 win over Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup last week.
The goalkeeper was at fault for both of the League One side’s goals that were scored within 10 minutes of each other.
However, Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said after the game that he has “total confidence” in Pickford and he’s not interested in bringing in another keeper.
Asked by Football Insider what can be done to get the best out of Pickford, Bent suggested: “Potentially a little bit more competition would be good.
“I can understand why Everton are maybe looking at another goalkeeper. Romero is the one they’re looking at from (Manchester) United and he seems to be a very good goalkeeper.
“Maybe he’s got a little bit complacent as England no. 1 and Everton no. 1.
“For his international place he has been challenged because he’s got (Nick) Pope coming after him.
“For me, it’s a case of getting him back to his basics and maybe a little bit of a push from people around him and hopefully he can get that form back because when he’s on form there’s no doubt he’s a top goalkeeper.”
