Kevin Campbell is over the moon Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes is ready to return to action this weekend.

The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 23-year-old the “best centre-half at the club” ahead of the FA Cup tie against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Gabriel has missed Arsenal’s last four Premier League fixtures as a result of a suspension and a Covid self-isolation period.

The £27million summer signing confirmed his return on Twitter today and he is now expected to be in contention to face Newcastle this weekend.

Pablo Mari, 27, has started in Gabriel’s absence, the Gunners winning all three of the games in which he has played.

When asked by Football Insider if it would be harsh for Arteta to drop the Spanish defender upon Gabriel’s return, Campbell said:

“It is going to be really interesting to see what Mikel Arteta does. These are the types of dilemmas that the manager needs to have.

“It would be very harsh on Pablo Mari but he was only the incumbent because of a suspension and the Covid protocols that kept Gabriel out.

“The great thing about it, is that there is enough games coming up for everyone to play.

“But the best centre-half at the football club is Gabriel, let’s not get it twisted, he is the best at the club.

“Unfortunately someone is going to have to make way and I expect Mari to be the one.”
