Noel Whelan has compared the progression of Leeds United winger Ian Poveda to that of Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds striker and boyhood Whites fan believes the 20-year-old could be “integral” to the club having a successful season.
Football Insider revealed last week that Poveda’s “unbelievable” performances in training have blown away Leeds staff and players.
He joined the club from Manchester City in January but made just four Championship appearances, including one start, as the Yorkshire giants secured the title.
The London-born ace has featured in Leeds’ last two Premier League games including an impressive performance in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
Asked by Football Insider about the winger’s progress, Whelan said: “You look at the way we talk about Calvert-Lewin’s progression, this could be a similar type of thing.
“He’s still learning his trade, he’s still getting to grips with the Premier League, he’s still getting to know his teammates.
“From what we saw against Manchester City when he came on, that desire, drive, skill and quality. This is a really exciting prospect for the future and somebody that is going to be integral this season to us being successful, not just staying in the Premier League.
“He is one exciting player and he is another player who we hope keeps progressing because if we do, we’ve got a real player on our hands.
“He’s got everything you want from a winger, the only problem for me is I’d want him to bulk up a little bit more but he did show great strength against Manchester City and sometimes strength comes from your mind.”
In other Leeds United news, Football Insider can REVEAL that the Whites are ready to swoop to sign a midfielder by 5pm Friday and £10million will seal the deal.
