Noel Whelan has tipped Neil Lennon to start experienced Celtic players Leigh Griffiths and Scott Brown this week in a bid to end the club’s “difficult spell”.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hailed the “fantastic” Griffiths, 30, as “one of the best finishers in the league”.
The Hoops striker scored his second goal of the season on Sunday as Neil Lennon’s side fell further behind Rangers in the title race with a 3-3 draw at Aberdeen.
Griffiths is yet to start a league game in 2020/21 having missed the opening month of the campaign with a calf strain.
Whelan expects Griffiths and Brown, who was benched for Sunday’s draw at Pittodrie, to start against Lille tomorrow.
“It was a great finish from Leigh Griffiths,” he told Football Insider.
“The time has come for him to get a run of games. Neil Lennon could use his experience.
“He is a player that knows where the back of the net is. It was a fantastic finish – a beautiful curler into the top corner. He is a player that will always score goals.
“On his day, he is one of the best finishers in that league and has proven that over a number of years now.
“That goal will do him a massive amount confidence-wise and he will be pushing for a start against Lille. It would surprise me if Lennon does not start him.
“When you are going through a difficult spell you need to go back to your Scott Brown, your Leigh Griffiths. They need experience out on the field.”
