Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths to be dropped against Dundee United on Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker suggested the 30-year-old's recent fitness issues mean he could be rested ahead of Saturday's Old Firm clash with Rangers.

Griffiths has been in fine goalscoring form in recent weeks having found the net three times in his last three appearances.

He has started the Hoops' last two Scottish Premiership games - his only league starts of the season.

The striker struggled with his fitness at the beginning of the season and was left out of the Bhoys' pre-season tour to work on losing weight.

After his Cup final heroics when he scored the Hoops' third goal in the 3-3 draw, manager Neil Lennon still insisted he needs to get fitter.

Lennon told the Scottish Sun: “This isn’t him and I falling out over anything, but I think he can get fitter.

With that in mind, Agbonlahor has claimed he will sit out at Parkhead in midweek.

He told Football Insider“I think he will be rested against Dundee United.

“He’s had fitness issues so the form that he’s in they’ll want to save him for the Old Firm.

“The form he’s in means it’s going to be a game he’s rested for.

“I do rate him as a player and it’s good to see him back playing and scoring goals for Celtic.”

Griffiths' explained to the Celtic website after scoring against Hamilton Academical on Saturday that he is keen to keep the momentum going.

He said: “I’m feeling good. I’m pleased with the minutes I got on the pitch today [against Hamilton] and the more minutes I get the fitter I’ll become.”
