Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to beat Wolves to the signing of “powerhouse” Liverpool striker Divock Origi in January.
The former Whites and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 25-year-old is the “perfect fit” for Marcelo Bielsa’s side because of his “power, pace, strength and aerial ability”.
The Daily Mail claim that Wolves are one of a number of clubs monitoring the Belgium international’s situation at Anfield ahead of the January transfer window.
Speculation regarding the striker’s exit intensified on Monday night after he surprisingly removed ‘Liverpool’ from his Twitter profile.
Origi still has four years left on his contract with the Reds, having improved terms shortly after the club’s Champions League triumph in the summer of 2019.
When asked by Football Insider if he would like to see the Liverpool cult hero at Elland Road in 2021, Whelan said:
“I would like to see Leeds show a bit of intent in the January market and go and sign a striker who has experience in the Premier League.
“We need a player that will be complimentary to the side and Origi is the perfect fit.
“He comes from great stock at Liverpool. He likes to run in behind, he is a powerhouse, has pace, strength and aerial ability. We predominantly down those wide areas so he is ticking a lot of boxes for me.
“We only have one out and out striker in Patrick Bamford. God forbid he suffers an injury this season because then we are left very, very bare up top.
“We do not have that quality that is going to get those important goals. Tyler Roberts is not a recognised striker and he does not have the physical presence which is needed.”
