Leeds United striker Tyler Roberts has been linked with a move to the Championship – but he should think very carefully before saying goodbye to the Premier League.
That is according to former England, Spurs and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams after the Mail suggested Roberts is being targeted by second-tier Bournemouth.
The 21-year-old forward has been used only sparingly by Marcelo Bielsa this season, making just two starts against Sheffield United and Manchester City respectively.
Darren Bent said that, in Roberts’ position, he would go somewhere where he was guaranteed minutes, but he also acknowledges that the situation is not the same for every player and varies depending on their career aims.
“It’s always difficult when you’re talking about a player leaving the Premier League and going to the Championship to play games,” he told Football Insider.
“It takes a different kind of person to just go and do that. It’s not as easy as that. Some people wanna stick it out as long as they can because they know the Premier League is a difficult place to get to and if this is gonna be your only chance you wanna hold onto it as long as possible.
“I don’t think Leeds will go down, so he might be thinking he’ll stick it out for this season, at least get a full season in the top-flight. Then address the lack of game time next season if he wants to move.
“I’ve always needed to play games, so I’d advise him to go and play. But if he wants to stay in the Premier League, then who am I to say otherwise?”
Roberts signed for Leeds from West Bromwich Albion in a deal worth £2.5million in January 2018.
Since then, he has played 57 times for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals in total.
