Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Leeds United summer transfer target Todd Cantwell to earn a move back to the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England forward claimed the Norwich City star’s recent performances have been poor as his head has been turned.
This site revealed last week that the Canaries regret not selling the 22-year-old during the summer after Leeds tabled a £15million bid.
Cantwell has had a torrid start to life back in the Championship and has not contributed a goal or an assist all term.
Asked by Football Insider whether the England Under-21 star still has the ability to play in the top flight, Agbonlahor said: “I think he definitely has Premier League quality.
“You’ve got to understand that when you’re a player like Cantwell you’re probably thinking ‘I wish I got that move’ and it can effect you.
“Look at Jadon Sancho he’s not in the form of the last couple of seasons because a big move didn’t go through.
“Maybe Cantwell thought he was going to get a move and it hasn’t happened and he might be thinking ‘oh, I’m back in the Championship’ and his head can go down and his form isn’t there.
“What they need to do is get him back to speed and even if he does want a move, they’ve got to explain to him that he’s only going to get that move if he shows everyone what he’s got.
“He has to get his great performances back and I’m sure he’ll get his move.”
Cantwell scored six goals and contributed two assists in 37 Premier League games last season.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has warned the club to be “very, very careful” after two big Kalvin Phillips updates.
