Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed the Liverpool owners to find the money to sign a centre-back in January if Jurgen Klopp identifies a suitable player.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England striker claimed the club may be struggling with the financial impact of coronavirus.

The Athletic's David Ornstein reports the Premier League champions have no intentions of signing a defender in the winter window.

The club are set to be without first-choice central defensive pair Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season.

And Agbonlahor believes the club will not let Klopp go into the rest of the season short on players.

“It’s hard,” he told Football Insider. “We don’t know how every club is coping with Covid financially.

“I’m sure if Liverpool had the money they’d give Klopp as much money as he’d want if he asked for it.

“He’s a great manager and he’s loved there.

“You just don’t know how the club's financial status is. What you hear might not be right.

“I’m sure if Klopp can identify the player that he wants then I’m sure Liverpool will give him the money he wants even if they have to borrow their money.

“They’ll find it because they know they can’t leave Klopp without the right amount of players.”

In the absence of Van Dijk and Gomez, Klopp has Joel Matip, midfielder Fabihno and academy graduates Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams to play at the heart of his defence.

Phillips was handed his Premier League debut against West Ham at the end of last month but Williams is yet to play in the league for the Reds.
