Manchester City will “have an eye on” Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz after his “excellent” performances over the past 18 months.
That is according to former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs about the possibility of the Pep Guardiola’s side resigning the 22-year-old.
The Daily Star report City are considering exercising their £25million buy-back clause in Luiz’s contract at the end of the season.
Guardiola confirmed in an interview last year that his club “have an option” that would allow them to re-sign Luiz.
City sold him to the Claret and Blue for £15million in July 2019 and the defensive midfielder put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Villa Park.
When asked by Football Insider if he expected Manchester City to explore the option of resigning the midfielder next year, Campbell said:
“”I think Douglas Luiz is a very good player. He has been excellent at Villa.
“He knows his posititon and knows what he needs to do and does it very, very well. He enables other players to play.
“I would not be surprised if City are looking at him to be honest. It is very difficult when a player that has been in your building flourishes elsewhere.
“I am sure they will have an eye on him.”
He has since made 51 appearances for Dean Smith’s side, earning his first two caps for Brazil in the process.
Luiz never made an appearance for City and spent his only two years at the club on loan at La Liga’s Girona.
