Darren Bent has claimed Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has lost his “swagger” because Jose Mourinho has no confidence in him.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker delivered his verdict after Alli was substituted at half-time in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Alli was one of four players who were replaced at the interval as Spurs lost 1-0 to Royal Antwerp in just their second defeat of the season.

The 24-year-old has started just three games this season and has been dragged off at half-time in two of those.

Mourinho said after the game, as quoted by the Express, that Spurs’ performance in the week had made his future team selection “very easy”.

Asked by Football Insider what has gone wrong for Alli, Bent said: “I know what it’s like, he’s lost confidence and he thinks he’s got a manager who doesn’t believe in him anymore.

“All he can try and do is do the things he does well. Unfortunately, on Thursday there were times when he was giving the ball away.

“He just hasn’t got the same type of swagger that he once had when he walked onto the pitch.

“It was the 2016/17 season where he scored over 20 goals then backed it up with another 14 the next season.

“We haven’t seen that type of Dele Alli consistently for a couple of years now.

“It’s now what do you do? He’s too good of a player, too talented, to not play.”

Alli moved to Spurs from MK Dons in 2015 and recorded his highest goal tally the following season when he scored 22 goals in 50 games across all competitions.

In the 2017/18 season, the England international scored 14 times and provided 17 assists in 50 games.
