Tottenham have been tipped to sign a “top” senior centre-back in January if they are firmly in the Premier League title race.

That is according to ex-Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley about where he has identified as the weakest link in Jose Mourinho’s side.

Tottenham are second in the Premier League after last Sunday’s 1-0 win at West Brom maintained their impressive start to the season.

Spurs have conceded nine goals from their eight Premier League matches, the joint-lowest in the division.

But Agbonlahor believes last month’s new arrival Joe Rodon may not be the top centre-back needed to display Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “100% Tottenham should have signed a top centre-back in the summer.

“I look at their centre-backs and I just see there’s goals leaked there. They haven’t got that big centre-half who is going to get you out of trouble.

“Alderweireld, Sanchez, Dier, they’re okay defenders but I don’t think they’re the ones who are going to take Spurs to a title.

“Maybe that’s something Mourinho might look at in January if Spurs are not far off [the top of league]. I can see it.

“They’re not far off building a team that can challenge. Whilst they’ve got Bale there for the season this could be the year where they need to try and push and go for it.”

Alderweireld and Dier have been paired in central defence in the last three Tottenham league matches, since the 3-3 draw against West Ham last month.

Sanchez was a regular in the team earlier in the season but he appears to have paid the price for his own goal against the Hammers and some indifferent defensive displays.
