Pundit expects Everton to be busy in January after £36m Usmanov reveal

Frank McAvennie insists Everton fans can only judge Rafael Benitez at the end of the season.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, can’t understand the criticism levelled at the Spaniard.

Everton have lost their last three Premier League games, leaving them 10th in the top flight.

This comes after a summer in which the Toffees spent very little due to financial fair play rules.

Andy Lonergan, Andros Townsend, Asmir Begovic and Salomon Rondon all joined the club on free transfers.

Demarai Gray was the only player to join for a fee.

This is why McAvennie claims Benitez has to be given time to assemble his own squad.

“You have to give Benitez the season,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You can’t judge him now. This isn’t his team, they spent next to nothing in the summer.

“Look how much Ancelotti spent while he was there. It’s currently his squad still at Everton.

“They should have a fair bit more to spend in January. Let Rafa splash out and bring his own players in and then judge him.

“Yeah, it’s not been amazing so far but who thought it would be? It’s a project that needs a steady leader.

“Everton will fail if they don’t back a manager properly. It will be another Ancelotti.

I don’t get the rushing to conclusions now.”

Carlo Ancelotti ditched Everton to return to Real Madrid after just one season at Goodison Park.

He achieved a 10th-placed finish.
