Pundit fears for Sessegnon after Tottenham injury update

Noel Whelan has admitted he is concerned by the number of injury problems suffered by Tottenham starlet Ryan Sessegnon after a fresh setback.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 21-year-old should not be picking up as many issues as he has at this stage of his career.

As confirmed by England (6th September), Sessegnon withdrew from the under-21s and returned to Spurs after picking up a knock in training.

The Evening Standard (9th September) report the £25m signing from Fulham has picked up a hamstring problem.

As such, Sessegnon will reportedly miss this weekend’s clash against Crystal Palace.

Whelan admitted the former Fulham youngster has had no luck with injuries recently.

Whelan told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “It’s one step forward, two steps back.

“He can’t get a break. It’s unfortunate, devastating, sometimes you go through periods where this happens and you do get niggles.

“But you’ve got to be strong enough and have that strength of character to come through these stages in your football career.

“It isn’t great because he’s very young. He shouldn’t really be picking up this many niggles.

“It’s happened to begin the season, there’s plenty of the season left. He’s not been a regular starter.

“In his eyes, he’ll be wanting to push to get in that side. To be a big part of the plans for Nuno and Tottenham this year.

“It’s something that neither needed right now, the player or the club.

I’m sure there will be people that can cover that base because he’s not been part of the team.”

Sessegnon missed eight games while on loan at Hoffenheim last season.

He struggled for fitness during pre-season but was on the bench for Spurs’ last two league games.
