Pundit fires Celtic warning after shattering McGregor update

Noel Whelan has urged Ange Postecoglou to be careful with Callum McGregor’s fitness ahead of a big night for Celtic.

The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on McGregor’s fitness.

Today (29 September) Postecoglou revealed McGregor won’t be available for selection against Bayer Leverkusen.

Postecoglou was previously quoted by Glasgow Times (September 22) as saying the midfielder could return in time to face Bayer tomorrow.

Until his injury, McGregor had started every game under Ange Postecoglou.

The Hoops have failed to win without their captain and face a tough test on Thursday night.

Even though Bayer pose a huge task for Celtic, Whelan praised Postecoglou for not risking his “talisman” McGregor if he isn’t fully fit.

“You have to be really careful,” Whelan told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“You have to be mindful of needing players long-term as well. The player needs to be fully fit and over that knock.

“If they aren’t, they will get injured again or suffer another setback.

“It could be a different injury too. It’ shard bringing a player back into an intense match where there is that pace.

“The dynamics are different to the training ground. They have a lot of injuries as it is, the last thing they want is their talisman to start a game when he isn’t 100% fit.”

Celtic lined up with James McCarthy, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic in the middle against Dundee United at the weekend.

The Hoops lost the game 1-0.
