Alan Hutton has claimed certain Tottenham players have suffered a serious loss of confidence due to Jose Mourinho.
The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga and Serge Aurier have all struggled due to a lack of self-belief.
The Telegraph claim Spurs’ stars are losing patience with the Portuguese boss and his comments after the 2-2 draw against Newcastle.
Asked why his team appeared defensively frail in comparison to his old sides, Mourinho replied: “Same coach, different players.”
He also caused confusion when he claimed Toby Alderweireld’s absence from the squad was due to a late return from international duty.
However, the Belgium international was pictured and videoed in training on both Thursday and Friday before the visit to St James’ Park.
Hutton admitted he could see the squad’s frustration start to spill over onto the pitch.
“I think you can see sometimes where confidence isn’t where it should be,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“I think that’s how mistakes have come about from the likes of Sanchez. He’s had a lot of pressure on his shoulders from the likes of Mourinho.
“You look at Serge Aurier at right-back, Tanganga’s come in and played, Doherty isn’t there. You need a little bit of confidence sometimes from the manager.
“I just don’t feel, at times when it’s needed, Mourinho has given it to the players. In certain times on the pitch you can see it where the confidence is low. I don’t think that’s helped them.
“They’ve been really up and down this season. They’ve been great one minute and just really poor the next. I think that’s the problem, that’s the frustrating part.”
