Pundit issues claim on Chris Wood quitting Newcastle United after latest

Chris Wood will remain at Newcastle next season even if the club signs a big-name striker this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the New Zealander’s form.

Wood, 30, has scored just twice since joining Newcastle in January and missed a simple chance to open the scoring as his side lost 5-0 to Man City on Sunday (8 May).

According to The Telegraph (12 May) Newcastle will make a bid for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

Even if Newcastle do sign Calvert-Lewin, Kenny expects Wood to remain at St James’ Park next season.

“He’s only just joined this massive club,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s a step up from Burnley and he has done ok in my opinion. He will have wanted more goals but they just haven’t fallen for him.

“I think if Newcastle do get this new striker in, this big-name guy, Wood can still stay.

“Callum Wilson is always injured and after him, there is very little to choose from.

“He joined for £25million too so Newcastle will want him to deliver a bit more. I think he stays.

“He isn’t a bad option to have especially off the bench when they might be chasing a game.

“Lump the ball up to Wood and see what he does. It’s not a pretty tactic but it can work.”

Calvert-Lewin, 25, has struggled with injuries this season, only making 14 appearances in the league.

He has scored three goals in the top flight.
