Pundit issues emphatic verdict on Celtic signing Ryan Porteous after 'great' transfer claim

Alan Hutton has claimed Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous has the ability to play for Celtic.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender said the Hoops have enough options in central defence.

The 23-year-old received widespread praise after playing for Scotland in a 0-0 draw with Ukraine last month to help secure the top spot in their Nations League group.

Porteous has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Easter Road.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun (8 October), Hibs boss Lee Johnson said the club have made a “strong” contract offer to the defender.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, as quoted by Football Scotland (15 October), Hibs legend Tam McManus suggested Ryan Porteous would be a “great” fit for the Hoops and insisted they would be keen to land him on a free.

But Hutton suggested another centre-back is not what the Green and Whites need.

I think he is a really good player, he has shown that at such a young age,” he told Football Insider.

Do Celtic really need him at this moment in time? I am not so sure. I think the partnership with [Moritz] Jenz and [Cameron] Carter-Vickers is very strong, [Carl] Starfelt is there and [Stephen] Welsh as well.

They have got a lot of competition within that area. But you never shut the door on a player than can come in and enhance your squad.

So I am sure Ange will be looking at certain areas. He could possibly be on the list but he definitely has the attributes to step up.
