Pundit issues 'massive' Man United claim after Ruben Neves twist
Frank McAvennie is not surprised Ruben Neves turned down a move to Man United in the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said any “big” payer will turn down a move to Old Trafford at the moment.
According to Spanish outlet Sport (29 September), Erik Ten Hag’s side were hoping to negotiate with the 25-year-old during the summer as they sought out a replacement for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
The Portugal international was said to show little interest in negotiating with the Manchester club as he holds out for a “dream” move to Barcelona.
The La Liga club’s financial situation meant they couldn’t afford the midfielder in the summer window but Neves is willing to wait until next year.
Neves currently has two years left on his contract at the Molineux.

When asked if he was surprised Neves turned down a move to the Red Devils, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No. “I think a lot of people will be turning down a move. Ten Hag has done something with them but they are not the team they used to be that is for sure. I do not care what anyone says, the team they have just now are not going to win anything.
“Pushing for European spots this year will be good for Man United. I know that sounds crazy but just pushing for a European spot is a lot better than where I thought they would be at the end of the season.
“They were on a slippery slope but he has turned it round. The big players are not going to go there. The big players want Champions League and it looks like Man United will not get that next year either. So why would you want to sign? They are a massive club, one of the biggest clubs in the world and it is a shame they have not got it right.“
