Pundit issues 'phenomenal' Varane claim after Man United update

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on “phenomenal” Man United defender Raphael Varane ahead of the visit of Wolves.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one is adamant the 28-year-old was the Red Devils’ “best signing last summer.”

Varane was a second-half substitute for United’s 3-1 win over Burnley on Thursday after returning from injury at Newcastle three days earlier.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (31 December), Ralf Rangnick revealed he demoted the centre-half from the starting XI over injury fears.

The ex-Real Madrid star has missed 10 games this season because of muscular problems.

When asked by Football Insider’s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Varane’s start, Robinson said: “Varane was their best signing last summer.

“There is still a lot to come from him. He is a proven world-class defender.

“Defensively, United have had a lot of problems. As soon as he comes back into the team and puts a run of games together I’m sure there will be an improvement.

“Under Rangnick they have looked more defensively sound, on the most-part.

“When Varane gets back up to speed I think he will strengthen the spine of the team. Varane is world class. His reading of the game and his pace is phenomenal.

“He just misses too many games through injury.”

Varane has made 11 appearances across all competitions this season.

United welcome Wolves to Old Trafford on Monday.
