Pundit issues 'surprise' Cantwell claim as Newcastle transfer update reported
Noel Whelan has admitted he would be “very surprised” if Norwich City allow Todd Cantwell to join Newcastle United this month.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 23-year-old’s capture would represent “good business” for the Magpies.
The Chronicle (11 January) report Cantwell would be very interested in a move to Tyneside.
As reported by The Telegraph’s Jason Burt on Monday (10 January), Cantwell could join Newcastle “soon” to become Eddie Howe’s second signing at St James’ Park.
Meanwhile, The Sun (7 January) claims the attacking midfielder has been told he can leave for £15million amid the Magpies’ interest.
Whelan admitted it would be “strange” for Norwich to let the England under-21 international leave for a relegation rival.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He has had links to many clubs over the last couple of seasons.
“That is down to the way he has progressed and played at Norwich.
“I’m very surprised that a team down there, fighting and battling alongside Newcastle to stay up, would allow a player like that to go.
“It says to me the money is more important than actually staying in the Premier League. That decision, to allow him to go to a rival, would strengthen Newcastle and weaken Norwich in the long run.
“It’s a strange one. If Newcastle stump the money up and Norwich accept, it shows Norwich’s intentions straight away. The money’s more important.
“We knew that anyway. They’ve not really gone out there and splashed the cash. Ever since they got back, went back down and came back up again, they’ve not spent big.
“He’s a player that cost them nothing having come through the ranks. Good business from Newcastle.”
Cantwell has played just eight times for Norwich this season.
He has a total of 45 Premier League appearances under his belt.
