Pundit makes '100%' Newcastle claim as January transfer plans revealed by source

Newcastle United are “100 per cent” right to target loan signings in the January transfer window, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said short-term deals for experience players give Eddie Howe’s side the best chance of survival in their “huge” fight against relegation.

The Magpies are still without a win this season after losing 2-0 at Arsenal on Saturday.

The January transfer window promises to be a pivotal month for the Premier League‘s bottom club if they are to beat the drop.

A Newcastle source told Football Insider (23rd November) that the club will only make loan signings in the winter window.

Phillips believes this is the best approach to take but suggested fans could look forward to one “big signing”.

“That’s the right approach to take, 100 per cent,” he told Football Insider.

“It is about staying in the league. Eddie Howe and the owners know that. Nobody wants to start this rebuild in the Championship next season. The priority is to stay in the Premier League.

“Right now, they need to sign players who can keep them in the Premier League. I think loan signings are the most sensible way to do that.

“Perhaps throw in one big signing to get people on the edge of their seats but the sensible route is not to spend lots of money on four or five players. It does not guarantee survival.

“They are in a huge relegation battle and it is not looking good right now. The early signs are encouraging but the results need to really pick up.

“I think experienced players on loan could help them turn it around.”
