Pundit makes 'massive' Erling Haaland claim as Chelsea near agreement

Noel Whelan has claimed Christoph Freund’s appointment would be “massive” for Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker said the 45-year-old “clearly has an eye for a player.”

According to the Evening Standard‘s Nick Purewal (19 September), Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with RB Salzburg’s Christoph Freund.

The club are said to have consulted Graham Potter on the potential appointment.

Freund has been credited for bringing Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Takumi Minamino to RB Salzburg.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the prospective arrival at Stamford Bridge, Whelan said: “It can only be a good thing.

“There are certain positions in a business like this that need to be appointed quickly and for the right reasons.

“It is such an important role. He has to be compatible with the manager as well because they are going to be working together.

“You only have to look at this guy’s track record. The fact that he spotted the likes of Haaland is a massive plus. He clearly has an eye for a player. He does due diligence on players rather than making a decision on them after one or two games.

“There has been a lot of change at Chelsea and this is an important position. Hopefully they are putting the pieces of the jigsaw together now. It can only benefit them on the pitch.”
