Pundit: Man United well placed to sign Rudiger after source's 'huge' reveal

Kevin Phillips has suggested it would be “brilliant” for Man United if they could benefit from Antonio Rudiger’s “strange” contract stand-off at Chelsea.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old could “make the difference” for the Old Trafford club.

This site exclusively revealed on Friday (7 January) that Man United are readying a “huge” offer for Chelsea star Rudiger.

A United source has told Football Insider that the German is firmly on their radar as they look to recruit a new centre-back ahead of the summer – with a “highly lucrative” contract planned.

Rudiger is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in June, and has made it clear he wants to become Chelsea’s top earner in order to stay at the club.

Phillips claimed “something’s not right” with the Blues and the Champions League-winning defender.

“He’d be an amazing signing for Man United,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“It’s a tough one when you’re both challenging in and around that top four, Rudiger could really make that difference.

“It’s a strange one – you wonder why he would want to leave Chelsea when they are where they are right now. But clearly, something’s not right.

“It would be brilliant for Man United if they could benefit. He’s been amazing for a number of years now and any club would be lucky to get him in.”

Despite the defender’s uncertain future, Rudiger has played all but one of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures this term.

Man United sit four points adrift of fourth-place Arsenal with one game in hand over the Gunners.

Ralf Rangnick’s side face Aston Villa on Monday in the FA Cup third round.
