Newcastle have lost almost all hope after 'big' Wilson update - Mills

Callum Wilson’s extended absence is a “big blow” for Newcastle United, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesborough and England right-back claimed it is only Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin who can offer Newcastle fans any hope after their poor start to the season.

The Athletic reported on September 13 Steve Bruce could be without his star striker until after the October international break due to a quad muscle injury.

It is the latest in a series of injuries Wilson has struggled with since moving to St. James’ Park last summer.

The 29-year-old missed 11 Premier League games last term through injury.

He started this season in fine form with two goals in the first three top-flight games.

Wilson now reportedly miss the away games at Watford and Wolves before returning for the visit of Tottenham next month.

“It’s a big blow,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Newcastle’s squad is very thin. You’re looking at Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, the stars who are going to create something out of nothing. They can give you that little bit of hope.

“They’ve just got to hang in and get through this very difficult situation which Steve Bruce has been in many, many times before.”

Wilson has scored 14 times and provided five assists in 31 games across all competitions for Newcastle.

He was handed the number nine shirt this season as Joelinton moved to number seven following the departure of Andy Carroll.

In other news, ‘Disastrous’ Bruce has just two games to save his job at Newcastle United.
