Pundit raises Morelos quit fears after Gerrard makes Rangers transfer admission

Alan Hutton has raised fears Alfredo Morelos may have had his head turned by a “bigger move” away from Rangers this summer.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Champions League football may not be enough to keep the Colombia international on board.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Steven Gerrard admitted Rangers could sell senior stars “if the right number lands” but suggested players should be motivated to stay by playing at the top level of European football.

Rangers will enter the Champions League qualifiers at the third round this summer.

As such, they face two ties to secure their place in the group stages among Europe’s elite.

Morelos has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox in recent years.

As such, Hutton admitted even the lure of Champions League football may not convince him to stay if an offer comes in this summer.

Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “It’s always a difficult one when we talk about Morelos.

“It seems like yes, he loves playing for Rangers. Of course he’ll want to play in the Champions League, every player does.

“But, has his head been a little bit turned from moves, bigger moves, in his opinion, to other clubs? Whether it be England or Italy or France, that’s something that only he’s going to be able to answer.

“I mean, me as it sits as a footballer, Champions League was massive. When that music comes on at the start of the games, you get the goosebumps, that’s what it’s all about.

“I hope that is enough for the likes of Morelos to stay. However, if an offer comes in that’s big enough and Rangers are willing that accept that, it’s simple. He’ll move on.

“The big thing out of that is I think Rangers are going to be given the money to then reinvest. That’s obviously good for the club moving forward.”

As revealed by Football Insider in March, Rangers are laying the groundwork to sign a top-class striker in case of Morelos’ departure.

The Colombian has netted 17 goals and contributed 12 assists in 42 appearances this term.

In other news, Rangers have secured a game-changing transfer deal, claims Hutton.
