Pundit reveals 'truth' about Phillips plans to quit Leeds next year after source's update

Alan Hutton has suggested Kalvin Phillips would find it “very difficult” to turn down a move from Leeds United to Manchester United next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland defender insisted the clubs’ rivalry would not prevent the 25-year-old from making a move.

As reported by the Daily Star (27th September), Manchester United have turned their attention to Phillips after ending their pursuit of West Ham enforcer Declan Rice.

The Red Devils’ reported interest comes as Leeds look to tie their midfielder down to a new contract.

As revealed by Football Insider (16th September), the Whites have opened talks to reward Phillips with an improved deal and a source has updated to reveal the club want the deal done by January.

A graduate of Leeds’ academy, the defensive midfielder has established himself as a mainstay for club and country.

However, Hutton suggested the player’s loyalties would not stop him moving to Old Trafford if the terms are right.

Asked if the rivalry between the clubs would come into Phillips’ thinking over a move, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it’s a little bit different now, if I’m totally honest.

“I think the opportunity to move to a club of Manchester United’s stature would be very difficult to turn down. Man United are crying out for a player for a player like Kalvin Phillips.

“They’re desperate for that sort of player. He ticks all the boxes for them. I think he can make Manchester United a better team if I’m totally honest.

“It’s going to be difficult, I think, for Leeds to tie him down to any longer deal. I know the fans won’t like me saying that but it’s just true.

“The facts are there for everybody to see. He’s a fantastic player.”
